Why Use D-Coded M12 Instead of RJ45?

Use D-coded M12 when the field connection needs screw locking and environmental protection that a typical unsealed RJ45 installation does not provide.

The M12 thread provides positive mechanical engagement. In a correctly designed and fully mated assembly, a suitable sealing system can provide protection against dust and water. The IP code itself is defined by IEC 60529 and rates enclosure protection against solids and liquids.5

  • resistance to accidental unplugging;
  • stable connection under vibration;

How Is D-Coded Different From A-Coded 4-Pin?

  6. Cable jacket: PVC or PUR based on motion, abrasion, oil, and budget.
  7. Motion: static, occasional flex, drag chain, or torsional movement.
  8. Protection: required IP condition and whether the connector remains mated.
  9. Routing: straight or right-angle and available device clearance.
  10. Approval or standard needs: project-specific certification or customer specification.

We recommend D-coded when it matches the device port, 100 Mbps bandwidth is sufficient, and the machine needs a rugged industrial Ethernet connection.

Scenario 1: PLC to remote I/O

The controller and I/O ports are 100 Mbps D-coded. Cable runs are static, but connectors sit near coolant splash and vibration. D-coded shielded cordsets with appropriate sealing and jacket material are a direct, economical match.

Scenario 2: field device to cabinet switch

The field device has a D-coded female port, while the switch uses RJ45 inside an enclosure. A D-coded-to-RJ45 assembly avoids an unnecessary adapter and can be overmolded to the required length.

Scenario 3: customer asks for "M12 4-pin"

We ask what the connector carries. If the answer is a proximity sensor switching signal, we investigate A-coded. If the answer is PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, or EtherCAT, we investigate D-coded and the Ethernet cable construction.
