A four-pin M12 connector is not automatically a sensor connector. In industrial automation, a visually similar four-contact product may instead be a D-coded Ethernet interface.
M12 D-coded connectors are mainly used for rugged 100 Mbps industrial Ethernet. They normally carry two data pairs through a four-contact M12 interface and are widely used with PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, PLCs, remote I/O, switches, and field devices that need a secure, sealed connection.
Their value is not the highest possible data rate. It is reliable 100BASE-TX connectivity in environments where an ordinary office-style RJ45 connection may be exposed to vibration, dust, moisture, or repeated machine maintenance.

D-coded M12 is typically a four-contact, two-pair connector for 100BASE-TX industrial Ethernet at 100 Mbps.
PROFINET guidance identifies the D-coded M12 interface for two-pair Category 5 industrial Ethernet connections and cites IEC 61076-2-101.1 Phoenix Contact likewise distinguishes D-coded, four-position Category 5 products for transmission up to 100 Mbps from eight-position X-coded systems for higher rates.2

This does not mean every cable labeled "four-core" is suitable. The two Ethernet pairs need the correct twist, impedance, conductor construction, shielding, and termination for the required network.
D-coded connectors are used between industrial Ethernet devices that need 100 Mbps communication and a mechanically secure field connection.
Common applications include:
ODVA's EtherNet/IP infrastructure guidance describes the four-pin D-coded M12 as an IP65-rated industrial Ethernet option,3 while EtherCAT implementation guidance recognizes D-coded M12 alongside RJ45 for EtherCAT device connections.4

Use D-coded M12 when the field connection needs screw locking and environmental protection that a typical unsealed RJ45 installation does not provide.
The M12 thread provides positive mechanical engagement. In a correctly designed and fully mated assembly, a suitable sealing system can provide protection against dust and water. The IP code itself is defined by IEC 60529 and rates enclosure protection against solids and liquids.5

However, an IP rating belongs to the tested connector system and condition - not to the letters "M12" alone. A loose coupling nut, damaged O-ring, wrong cable diameter in a field-wireable gland, or unmated connector can defeat the seal.
Likewise, shielding is a complete path. The cable braid, connector shell, panel receptacle, and equipment bonding method must work together.

A-coded 4-pin is commonly used for sensors and general signals; D-coded 4-pin is designed for industrial Ethernet. They have different keying and are not directly interchangeable.
This is one of the most frequent selection problems we see. A customer writes:
I need an M12 4-pin connector.
That statement gives the contact count but not the application. If we quote immediately, we may supply the wrong interface.

Specify the network, endpoints, cable, shielding, length, motion, and environment - not only "D-coded M12."

A common design uses a D-coded M12 connector at the exposed machine and an RJ45 plug inside the cabinet. Commercial product families support this transition for PROFINET and EtherCAT applications.8

We recommend D-coded when it matches the device port, 100 Mbps bandwidth is sufficient, and the machine needs a rugged industrial Ethernet connection.
The controller and I/O ports are 100 Mbps D-coded. Cable runs are static, but connectors sit near coolant splash and vibration. D-coded shielded cordsets with appropriate sealing and jacket material are a direct, economical match.
The field device has a D-coded female port, while the switch uses RJ45 inside an enclosure. A D-coded-to-RJ45 assembly avoids an unnecessary adapter and can be overmolded to the required length.
We ask what the connector carries. If the answer is a proximity sensor switching signal, we investigate A-coded. If the answer is PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, or EtherCAT, we investigate D-coded and the Ethernet cable construction.
We do not treat those as equivalent four-pin products. That one follow-up question prevents a large share of avoidable quotation and sampling errors.

Choose X-coded when the equipment and application require higher bandwidth, such as Gigabit or 10 Gigabit links. Do not upgrade only the cable if the device ports remain D-coded and 100 Mbps.
